A classic Italian tomato sauce for a whole host of delicious dishes. The most important thing about my tomato sauce if you want to work with tinned tomatoes is the san marzano tomatoes. No other tomato has this incomparable flavour of the Italian regions.

Italian tomato sauce recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 500 g San Marzano canned tomatoes
  • A small dash of red wine (optional)
  • 2 handful of fresh basil
  • ½ handful of oregano
  • ½ tsp marjoram
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Chop the onions and garlic and fry in olive oil until translucent and fragrant.

  2. Optional: Deglaze with a small dash of red wine and allow the alcohol to evaporate.

  3. Deglaze with canned San Marzano tomatoes.

  4. Add spices: Oregano, basil, marjoram, salt and pepper.

  5. Simmer until the sauce has thickened (approx. 15-20 minutes).

  6. Stir occasionally and flavour as required.

  7. Use the tomato sauce for your favourite dishes! - Vegetable lasagne, pizza, pasta, gnocchi, and much more
