Original italian limoncello recipe

Ingredients

  • 10 organic lemons
  • 1 litre optional 95% alcohol (e.g. vodka or clear grain)
  • 800 g sugar
  • 1 litre of water
  • 1 pkg baking powder
  • 1 large preserving jar

Directions

  1. Wash the lemons thoroughly with baking powder and peel them carefully with a peeler.

  2. Make sure you only take the yellow peel, not the white underneath as it can be bitter.

  3. Place the lemon peel in a large glass jar with a lid.

  4. Pour the alcohol over the lemon peel and close the glass jar tightly.

  5. Place in a cool, dark place and leave to infuse for at least 7 days. You can also leave it to infuse for up to a month for a stronger lemon flavour.

  6. Once the alcohol has infused sufficiently, prepare the sugar syrup. Bring the water and sugar to the boil

  7. !Allow the syrup to cool completely!

  8. Once the syrup has cooled, pour it into the glass container with the lemon peel and alcohol.

  9. Mix well and leave the limoncello to rest for a further 2 days.

  10. Filter the limoncello through a fine sieve or coffee filter to remove the lemon peel.

  11. Then pour the clear liqueur into bottles and store in the fridge or freezer.

  12. Enjoy your homemade limoncello well chilled as an after-dinner aperitivo or in cocktails!
